Hello fellow leaders!
I was unable to attend the last conference call but was wondering how everyone was doing with the conditions of our economy. Our little feed store "County Line Feed & Fertilizer" is hanging in there and I am now up to 20 goats and have with some good luck (12 nannies bred to a full south african boer that I leased). Some are already beginning to "show" signs of preparing for kidding and only two are questionable or not bred. Those of course will get to be sold soon.

I am also quite busy with my other hat in extension. Some of you as well as local producers have had questions about alternative sources for fertilizer and have asked about Monty's Liquid Fertilizer. I have had a few producers to try it - but do not expect miracles at first. This is a long program that you should follow to the letter but could end up saving you on your fertilizer costs.

Hope to see everyone soon.

Well you didn't miss much with the conference call, however, I am thinking about an alternative fertilizer practice as well. I think I saw a series of "60 Minutes" that hat a worm farmer producing organi fertilizer from worm waste. I plan to look into this.

Can you help me remember who you are. I have most everyone filed in my head by location -- are you the guy from Maryland?

Worm droppings are about the best fertilizer you can get! I saw the same show and was amazed at the operation. We have a local producer who is selling worm beds and the worms for $22 a pound. I can't do it on the scale that the guy did on 60 min. but I would like to add worm production to my little feed store. Especially since I have several fishing lakes local to my store. I believe that we all need to start developing businesses that service our entire communities more. Something like an old time general store. Not like a Wal-Mart but more like Ike's Place on the Walton's. Someplace people could walk or ride a horse to and get what they needed. Information, mail, feed, food and help.
Our garden next to the store is doing great! We have sold lots of Monty's by having folks just take a look at what it does in our garden. I am planning on adding strawberries and black berries next year - if I can get the hubby's approval!
